S3	NEW ITEM SENIOR REHEARSAL DAY for senior groups (and some S3 pupils involved in these) takes place NEXT WEDNESDAY 8^TH OCTOBER. These during-the-day rehearsals are absolutely invaluable in ensuring that senior instrumental groups and senior choir is prepared for the Christmas Concert at the Usher Hall on 18^th December due to the current split-site situation. The following groups will rehearse: Periods 1 & 2 1. Senior Wind Band (and also some S3 pupils) 2. Senior Clarsach Ensemble Periods 3 & 4 Senior Choir (all S4 – S6 pupils) Periods 5 & 6 1. Senior String Orchestra 2. Guitar Ensemble (and also some S3 pupils) French Alps Trip The Geography department are offering all students in S3 the opportunity to visit the sunny French Alps next May. Provisional dates are from 7^th to the 13^th and the cost should be £525. If you are interested please ask any of the geography teachers (Mr Stewart, Mrs Harvey-Jamieson & Mr O’Dea) for a letter with further details. English Premier League Trip English Premier League Trip: Please note that the deadline for deposits has been extended to the end of next week. The trip is also now open to S3 pupils. If you would like a form or to check out the itinerary, please see Mr Carstairs in the PE Department. The trip includes a World Cup-style 5-a-side Tournament, tour The Etihad Stadium, and see 2 Live Premier League matches: Newcastle United vs. QPR and Hull City vs. Tottenham Hotspur. 22^nd – 23^rd November, £210 pp.

School Magazine Could all S4-S6 pupils wishing to contribute to the school magazine, The Spark, attend a meeting after school on Thursday the 2^nd of October in 1.8? All years	Scottish Secondary Schools Road Race Championships 2014 The SSAA Secondary Road Race Championships are being held on Saturday 8^th November at Helix Park in Falkirk. This is a short distance road race for individuals with a team element. Anyone from S1-S6 can compete and races range from 1 mile to 2 miles. If you are interested in taking part in this Championship please see Miss Falconer in PE by Friday 10^th October. Entries after this date will not be put forward for the competition. Rotary International Young Musician of the year Competition 2014/2015 Entrants may compete in one instrument/voice only and should perform a piece of their own choice lasting no more than five minutes either vocally or on the instrument of their choice. A piano will be available in the venue but entrants must provide their own accompanist. Amplification is not allowed. A copy of all music scores will be required for the Judging Panel. The winners will receive a Winners Certificate and a cash prize. Every competitor is given feedback from the Judging Panel and a Certificate of Participation which can be included in development profiles or records of achievement. To enter this competition please ask the music department for an application form .HERIOT–WATT UNIVERSITY COMPOSER COMPETITION Are you an aspiring composer? Heriot-Watt are offering a prize of £400 to the best composition entered in their competition. There is no age limit. The piece is to be written for the group, ‘Inchcolm New Music Ensemble’, based at Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh. Deadline for submissions: 1^st February 2015. For further information come to the music department. Hockey Club Hockey is on Monday after school at Tynecastle High School, bus leaves Lauderdale Street at 16:00 and returns at 17:45 approx. Come along even if you’ve never played before! Equipment is provided. Any questions, see Miss Sinclair in Modern Languages. Reminder to return EE2 forms Reminder to return your EE2 forms ASAP – deadline was 20^th August!!!! You will not be allowed to go on any school trip unless we have your forms back! Any problems see your Guidance teacher. If you need another form please see Mrs Sinclair, Classroom Assistants Office at Lauderdale St or School Office at Darroch Shinty Club Shinty is on Monday, after school at Thirlestane until 5pm. Everyone welcome regardless of experience. Helmets, sticks and shinguards are provided. Edinburgh Secondary Schools Cross Country League Anyone interested in competing in the Cross Country League this year please see Miss Falconer for an information letter. The races will be held every Wednesday at 4.30pm til 5.15pm from 10^th Sept to Wed 8^th Oct and then they will commence on Wed 25^th February 2015 to Wed 18^th March 2015. The league is open to all age groups for both girls and boys. Bands and Orchestras Bands and Orchestras have commenced rehearsals for the Christmas Concert. All pupils receiving instrumental lessons are required to participate in one or more of the school ensembles. Pupils who learn an instrument outside school are very welcome to join one or more of the ensembles available. Monday: SENIOR WIND BAND in B3 AFTER SCHOOL Tuesday: SENIOR ORCHESTRA IN B1 AFTER SCHOOL Wednesday: SENIOR CHOIR IN B1 AFTER SCHOOL Thursday: PIPE BAND IN B1 AFTER SCHOOL -check notices around school for specifics Junior Ensembles All pupils receiving instrumental lessons are required to participate in one or more of the school ensembles. Pupils who learn an instrument outside school are very welcome to join one or more of the ensembles available. Absence calls will go home to parents if pupils do not register.
